Los Angeles, July 2, 2025 — Acclaimed actor Julian McMahon, known for his iconic roles in Nip/Tuck, Charmed, and Fantastic Four, has died at the age of 56 following a private battle with cancer. The news was confirmed by his wife, Kelly McMahon, in a heartfelt statement on Tuesday.
“Julian passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after a courageous and private battle with cancer,” she said. “He was a man of immense talent, deep compassion, and unwavering dedication to his family, friends, and fans.”
McMahon’s death comes as a shock to many, as the actor had not publicly disclosed his illness. Family sources confirmed that he had been quietly receiving treatment for cancer over the past year while continuing to work on film and television projects.
His wife added, “Julian never wanted his illness to define him. He remained focused on his passion for acting and committed to delivering his best work until the very end.”
Born in Sydney, Australia, in 1968, Julian Dana William McMahon was the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir William McMahon. After early modeling success, he transitioned to acting in the late 1980s, gaining initial recognition on the Australian soap Home and Away.
McMahon later moved to the United States, where he secured roles in Another World and Profiler. His portrayal of Cole Turner, the brooding demon-turned-lover in Charmed, catapulted him to international fame. However, it was his performance as Dr. Christian Troy, a charismatic and morally complex plastic surgeon in Nip/Tuck, that earned him critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination.
In film, he gained further recognition as Doctor Doom in Fantastic Four (2005) and its sequel, expanding his appeal to global audiences.
Despite his illness, McMahon remained active in the entertainment industry. His most recent public appearance was in March 2025, at the premiere of The Surfer in Austin, Texas, alongside co-star Nicolas Cage.
He also completed work on a Netflix mystery-drama, The Residence, slated for release later this year. It will mark his final on-screen performance.
Tributes have poured in from across the industry and beyond.
“Julian was magnetic on screen and deeply kind off it,” said Charmed co-star Rose McGowan. “He brought depth, charm, and vulnerability to every role.”
Holly Marie Combs, also of Charmed, called him “brilliant and endlessly funny.”
Ioan Gruffudd, who appeared opposite him in Fantastic Four, said McMahon was “a true professional and a joy to work with.”
Dick Wolf, creator of the FBI franchise where McMahon starred in FBI: Most Wanted, noted, “Julian was one of the most talented and dedicated actors I’ve ever worked with. His loss is immeasurable.”
Julian McMahon is survived by his wife Kelly and daughter Madison, from his previous marriage to actress Brooke Burns. Though fiercely private about his personal life, McMahon was known for his devotion to his family and his grounded nature despite decades in the spotlight.
Kelly described him as “a loving husband and father who found joy in simple moments and treasured every day.”
Julian McMahon’s contributions to film and television spanned over 30 years. His ability to portray complex characters with nuance and intensity left a lasting impression on audiences and critics alike.
His legacy endures not only in his memorable roles but also in the hearts of fans, colleagues, and aspiring actors he inspired.
