WASHINGTON, D.C. — July 1, 2025:
NASA is undergoing significant internal changes as sweeping budget cuts threaten to reshape the future of America’s space agency. A proposed 24% reduction in funding under the Trump administration has led to NASA initiating a series of buyouts, early retirements, and looming layoffs across multiple departments.
According to internal sources, the cuts could result in the loss of nearly 5,000 jobs, trimming NASA’s workforce from approximately 17,000 to just under 12,000 employees. Departments focused on science missions, climate observation, and exploratory research are among those expected to face the steepest reductions.
However, amid the financial turbulence, NASA is turning to the power of media to stay connected with the public. In a bold move to boost visibility and global engagement, the agency has partnered with Netflix to bring its digital streaming platform, NASA+, to the world’s most popular streaming service.
Launched last year, NASA+ offers a wide range of space-focused programming, including:
Live rocket launches and mission coverage
Real-time views from the International Space Station (ISS)
Astronaut interviews and spacewalks
Documentaries on planetary science, Mars missions, and telescope discoveries
Educational features for students and science enthusiasts
This new deal ensures NASA+ will remain ad-free and freely accessible on the NASA website and mobile app, while also becoming available through Netflix’s massive user base of over 700 million worldwide. The agency hopes the partnership will drive public awareness, support for its programs, and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers.
Industry experts view this move as a strategic attempt to counteract declining visibility due to political and financial challenges. With private space companies like SpaceX and Blue Origin dominating headlines, NASA’s collaboration with Netflix aims to reclaim its storytelling power and remind audiences of its scientific achievements — from the James Webb Space Telescope to Artemis moon missions.
The official launch date for NASA+ on Netflix has not yet been announced, but sources say it is expected to debut sometime in summer 2025.
