Night City is expanding once again—both on screen and in-game. CD Projekt Red and Netflix have officially confirmed the development of Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2, alongside the announcement of Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.3, promising deeper storytelling and new gameplay features. The announcement was made during Anime Expo 2025, sparking excitement across the Cyberpunk fanbase.
The acclaimed anime Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which debuted in 2022, is returning with a new season. However, this time the series will feature an entirely new cast and storyline, separate from the original arc of David Martinez. Officially referred to as a “standalone” continuation, the upcoming season will still be set in the neon-soaked chaos of Night City.
Netflix, Studio Trigger, and CD Projekt Red are collaborating once again to bring this next chapter to life. The creative team promises a narrative that is darker, bloodier, and more emotionally resonant than its predecessor.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who helmed the emotionally charged Episode 6 of the first season. Longtime CDPR writer Bartosz Sztybor will oversee the script, while Studio Trigger continues as the animation studio. Character designer Kanno Ichigo and screenwriter Masahiko Otsuka are also returning.
According to official statements, the story will explore themes of revenge, emotional trauma, and redemption, offering fans a deeper, more mature narrative while preserving the explosive animation and style fans loved in Season 1.
While no specific date has been confirmed, Cyberpunk Edgerunners Season 2 is currently in production and is expected to premiere on Netflix sometime in 2026. A teaser and branding materials were showcased privately during Anime Expo 2025, with a public trailer anticipated later this year.
In parallel, CD Projekt Red also addressed the upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.3. Initially expected in late June 2025, the update has been delayed as developers aim to deliver a more polished experience. The delay reflects CDPR’s continued commitment to refining the game after its widely praised 2.0 update and the Phantom Liberty expansion.
While an exact launch date has not been announced, the studio confirmed that Update 2.3 remains in active development.
Although full patch notes have not yet been released, several expected features and improvements include:
Enhanced NCART metro system functionality
Expanded weapon and vehicle customization options
More immersive side gigs and dynamic events
Dialogue and interaction enhancements
Bug fixes and performance upgrades
Update 2.3 is expected to be one of the final major updates to Cyberpunk 2077 before CD Projekt Red shifts its focus fully to the sequel, Project Orion.
The Phantom Liberty expansion, which launched in 2023, recently made its debut on Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025. It has now surpassed 10 million copies sold, reinforcing the franchise’s popularity and profitability.
The success of Phantom Liberty is expected to influence the scale and ambition of future updates and the sequel currently in development.
CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed development of the next entry in the franchise, codenamed Project Orion. Built on Unreal Engine 5, the sequel will reportedly take place in a new U.S. city within the same universe, expanding the lore and offering a new protagonist.
The sequel is in early development stages, with no release window announced yet.
From its rocky beginnings to its current resurgence, the Cyberpunk franchise has undergone a remarkable transformation. Cyberpunk Edgerunners reignited interest in the IP with its emotional storytelling and distinct visual style, while CD Projekt Red has steadily rebuilt trust with meaningful updates and expansions.
With a new season of the anime, a gameplay-rich update, and a full sequel in development, the future of Cyberpunk is brighter than ever.
2025 marks a turning point for the Cyberpunk brand. Edgerunners Season 2 aims to take fans deeper into the emotional underworld of Night City, while Update 2.3 enhances the player experience in-game. As both projects continue development, fans have plenty to look forward to—from new characters and plotlines on screen to enhanced features and content in-game.
