Zamora, Spain — July 3, 2025:
Portuguese international and Liverpool FC forward Diogo Jota has died in a fatal car crash in northwestern Spain, authorities confirmed early Thursday morning. The 28-year-old football star was traveling with his younger brother André Jota, who also lost his life in the accident.
The incident occurred around midnight on the A-52 motorway near Zamora. According to Spanish broadcaster TVE and local emergency services, the vehicle lost control, collided with a barrier, overturned, and caught fire upon impact. Both occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.
Career Cut Short
Diogo Jota, widely recognized for his sharp finishing, relentless pressing, and football intelligence, joined Liverpool FC in 2020. Since his arrival, he made 182 appearances and scored 65 goals, contributing to the club's recent Premier League title in 2024–25, as well as victories in the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
He also featured prominently for the Portugal national team, earning over 40 caps and representing his country in both the UEFA Euro and FIFA World Cup competitions. Jota had become an essential part of Portugal’s attacking line, praised for his work rate and tactical versatility.
Recent Personal Milestones
The news comes just weeks after Jota celebrated his wedding to long-time partner Rute Cardoso in their hometown of Porto. The couple share three young children. The sudden loss has devastated both their family and the larger football community.
Jota's brother, André, 26, was also in the vehicle at the time of the crash. Reports from the Guardia Civil suggest the vehicle was traveling at high speed when it veered off the road. Investigations are ongoing.
Shockwaves Through Football
Tributes have poured in from across the world. Liverpool FC released an official statement saying:
“We are heartbroken by the loss of Diogo Jota, a remarkable player, a beloved teammate, and a cherished member of the Liverpool family. His talent, spirit, and humility left an indelible mark on our club and the game.”
Cristiano Ronaldo, João Félix, and other Portugal teammates shared emotional messages, expressing disbelief and sorrow.
Fans gathered outside Anfield and Paços de Ferreira, Jota’s former club, to light candles and pay tribute. A memorial is expected to be held by both Liverpool and the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) in the coming days.
Clarifying Misinformation
Amid widespread confusion online, search terms such as “Did Diogo Jota die?”, “Diogo Jota death”, and “Is Diogo Jota dead?” began trending globally. Several users mistyped his name as “Diago Jota” or “Diego Jota”, but authorities have confirmed the identity of the victims as Diogo and André Jota.
Legacy of a Rising Icon
Born in Massarelos, Porto, Jota began his professional career at Paços de Ferreira before moving to Atlético Madrid, and later Wolverhampton Wanderers. His career soared at Liverpool, where he quickly became a fan favorite under manager Jürgen Klopp.
He was known not only for his impact on the pitch but also for his character off it. Diogo Jota supported youth football programs in Portugal and was actively involved in charity work.
What’s Next
Both Liverpool and Portugal FC have canceled press activities in the wake of the tragedy. UEFA is expected to observe a moment of silence in upcoming matches. Meanwhile, funeral arrangements will be announced after discussions with the family.
As the football world comes together in mourning, one thing is clear—Diogo Jota’s influence, passion, and spirit will live on far beyond the pitch.
