Los Angeles, June 30, 2025 — LeBron James is set to return to the Los Angeles Lakers for the 2025–26 NBA season after opting into his $52.6 million player option. However, as the 40-year-old enters his record-breaking 23rd season, questions loom over whether this will be his final run in a Lakers uniform — or the NBA altogether.
According to a report by The Athletic’s Sam Amick, there is growing belief within the organization that this upcoming season could mark the end of LeBron’s tenure with the franchise, regardless of whether he retires in 2026.
“It’s becoming increasingly clear that — even if James doesn’t retire next summer — this could be his last season in a Lakers uniform,” Amick wrote.
The Lakers are reportedly focused on long-term planning as they prepare for life beyond the LeBron era. Any commitment to James beyond the current season is considered a potential obstacle to building a championship-caliber roster in the coming years.
Amick emphasized that tying up cap space with another max-level contract for James is not seen as a wise move internally, especially with 26-year-old superstar Luka Doncic expected to be eligible for a contract extension on August 2.
Once Doncic signs, the Lakers’ future plans will revolve around maintaining salary cap flexibility and building a competitive team around him. Sources say the front office is already exploring future star opportunities, including monitoring the situation of Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo.
Adding a personal element to the discussion, LeBron’s wife, Savannah James, reportedly wants her husband to call it quits after the 2025–26 campaign. During a recent dinner in New York City with former teammate Kevin Love and other close friends, Savannah openly expressed her wish for LeBron to retire soon.
In a moment shared on Instagram, LeBron was heard saying, “[Savannah] wants me to f***ing retire in the next year or so,” highlighting the growing family desire for a conclusion to his legendary career.
Despite the retirement rumors, James remains one of the most effective players in the league. Last season, he averaged 24.4 points, 7.8 rebounds, and 8.2 assists per game — exceptional numbers for any age, let alone 40.
With his return, LeBron will make history as the first NBA player to enter a 23rd season. Yet the focus for the Lakers is beginning to shift toward what comes next.
Whether this season becomes his farewell tour or just his final year in Los Angeles remains uncertain. One thing is clear — LeBron’s presence continues to shape not only the Lakers’ future, but also the wider NBA landscape.
