Google Adds Gemini Spark AI Features to Google Photos

Google is bringing more of its services into its AI ecosystem, announcing that its personal agent, Gemini Spark, can now handle tasks within your Google Photos library. This allows users to ask Gemini Spark to perform actions in Google Photos, including editing pictures, organizing albums, automatically generating shared albums with selected favorite photos, converting images of concert flyers into calendar events, running workflows, and more.

On Thursday evening, Google Photos lead Shimrit Ben-Yair revealed the new functionality in a post on X, saying the capabilities would begin rolling out over the next few weeks to eligible Gemini AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the U.S. who use English.

Google did not specify whether, or when, the feature would become available more widely in international markets.

The expansion represents another effort by Google to determine how to make AI more useful and appealing to consumers — in this instance, by automating repetitive tasks and assisting users in managing photo libraries that have increasingly become large and difficult to organize.

The development arrives as the broader AI industry faces growing concerns about its failure to effectively communicate the value of AI to consumers. This week, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told Bloomberg that the industry has “done a terrible job” explaining the technology’s benefits, contributing to backlash from communities around the globe.

Google’s announcements of features like this are arguably part of that challenge. Although such capabilities can simplify particular tasks, they do not necessarily appear groundbreaking or even essential by themselves. After all, creating a photo album is hardly a difficult task. However, intense competition throughout the AI sector is encouraging companies to highlight virtually every AI-powered enhancement, regardless of how minor it may be, rather than waiting until they can present a larger narrative about how AI has meaningfully improved their software.

To access Gemini Spark through Google Photos, users must first link Google Photos with Gemini, then enable Spark from the upper corner of the Gemini app and enter a prompt.
