Smart home users will soon have the ability to manage Google Home-connected devices through an AI agent. On Wednesday, Google introduced early access to a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for its Google Home ecosystem, enabling MCP-compatible AI agents — including Claude, Hermes, OpenClaw, ChatGPT, and Google Antigravity — to securely interact with smart home devices and retrieve their event history.
The new capability lets users issue instructions in natural language for tasks such as checking camera summaries, keeping track of smart home activity, managing connected devices, and creating customized smart home dashboards.
Setting up the connection requires users to create a Google Cloud project and configure it for Home MCP. They must then give the MCP configuration information to their preferred AI agent and request that it complete the setup. The agent will subsequently prompt the user to sign in and authorize the required permissions. Google will also provide a setup guide through the Google Home Developer Center.
The system is designed to work with devices throughout the Google Home ecosystem, including Google Nest doorbells and thermostats as well as “Works with Google Home” (or Matter) products such as light bulbs.
Google has previously implemented MCP support across other parts of its business, including Google Cloud and data platforms, developer tools, and Google Workspace, among others. The Google Home integration is aimed more specifically at consumers exploring AI agents that can take care of routine, everyday tasks.
According to Google, MCP access will begin rolling out today and continue expanding over the next several weeks to U.S. subscribers of Google Home Premium Advanced. The higher-priced subscription costs $20 per month and includes features such as extended event-based video history, descriptive notifications and detailed alerts, video-history search tools, daily summaries, and additional capabilities.
Google did not say whether or when MCP support would become available more widely, including for additional subscription levels or in other markets.
The company is also gathering input from early users throughout the rollout through its Smart Home for Developers Community, according to Google.
