Google is now widely rolling out a redesigned Gemini overlay and homepage for Android users.
The Gemini overlay appears at the bottom of your screen when you activate it by saying “Hey Google,” long-pressing the power button, or swiping up from the bottom corners.
With this update, the overlay has been made smaller and simpler. It now features a ‘plus’ menu (for Camera and Gallery), a text input field labeled “Ask Gemini,” a microphone icon, and a Gemini Live shortcut. Google has removed the split-screen multitasking handle and the option to open the full Gemini app. Additionally, the Google Assistant-style greeting (“Good morning,” “Good afternoon,” or “Good evening”) has been removed.
As you speak, the overlay’s text field expands to display the transcription. The suggestion chips—such as “Ask about screen,” “Ask about PDF,” and “Ask about YouTube”—are now aligned to the left instead of being centered.
The Gemini app homepage has also been updated. The pill-shaped button that previously housed the camera and voice input has been removed. Now, voice input can be accessed from the ‘plus’ menu, which also includes options to upload files and Google Drive content for Gemini Advanced subscribers. The microphone retains its glowing ring animation when active, while the Gemini Live shortcut has been moved inside the main interface.
Inside the app, the “Ask Gemini” field now appears as a pill-shaped button, whereas the overlay uses a rounded rectangle design.
After appearing for some users in recent weeks, this redesigned Gemini overlay is now rolling out widely. To get the update, ensure your Google app is updated to version 16.2.40 in the Play Store.
As of today, the update is visible on all tested devices, including Samsung phones and the Pixel Tablet. On larger screens, the “Ask Gemini” field no longer stretches across the entire display.
