It's possible that desktop Macs with M2 Ultra and M2 Max chips will debut at WWDC

  • 06-June-2023

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg says that Apple is testing two desktop Macs with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips. The 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models of 2023 featured the M2 Max chip for the first time in January. However, the M2 Ultra chip is brand-new and would replace the M1 Ultra chip that Apple uses in the Mac Studio.

Although Gurman is unaware of the specific Macs that will include the chips, the machines are internally identified as "Mac 14,13" and "Mac 14,14." The desktop machines in testing right now are probably something else, possibly new versions of the Mac Studio. Apple is also working on new iMacs, but these are expected to feature M3 chips. Previous rumors suggested that the revamped Apple silicon Mac Pro could include the M2 Ultra chip. However, the Mac Pro that Apple is developing is labeled as "14,8" internally.

Back in April, Gurman expressed that there were updated ‌Mac Studio‌ machines planned for a future launch, however he likewise said that it was impossible that Apple would release a version of the ‌Mac Studio‌ with a ‌M2‌ Ultra chip since it would be essentially as strong as the future ‌Mac Pro‌, giving clients little reason to settle on a ‌Mac Pro‌.

The first machine that Apple has been testing includes a ‌M2‌ Max chip with eight high-performance cores, four efficiency cores, a 30-core GPU, and 96GB RAM. The chip is equivalent to the chip that is in the ‌M2‌ Max version of the 16-inch MacBook Pro.

The second machine has an ‌M2‌ Ultra chip with a 24-core CPU (16 high-performance cores and 8 efficiency cores) and a 60-core GPU, however earlier data recommends that ‌M2‌ Ultra chips could include up to a 76-core GPU. There are 64GB, 128GB, and 192GB of RAM available in various configurations.

Gurman claims that he anticipates multiple Macs to be introduced at the WWDC event, as Apple is testing these new Macs. One of those will be the 15-inch MacBook Air, yet we don't know which different Macintoshes could show up. Although Gurman doesn't say that these new Macs with M2 Max and M2 Ultra chips will be shown off at WWDC, it seems like a very real possibility.
